Serving RAG as an API

This content was generated with the assistance of AI and should be verified against the official documentation of each tool and framework before being relied on in production.

This section’s bibliography lists the reference material consulted while preparing these pages.

This page was written on 2026-09-30 against FastAPI 0.142.2, langchain 1.4.3, langgraph 1.2.12 and redis (redis-py) on Python 3.12, Spring AI 2.0.1 on Spring Boot 4.1.1 (Spring MVC, Spring Security’s OAuth 2.0 resource server), and LangChain4j 1.20.2 (see the version baseline). The FastAPI application (SSE route, WebSocket route and idempotency helper) was run in process with FastAPI’s TestClient, a scripted agent and fakeredis in place of Redis; the event stream shown below is its real output. The Java classes were compiled against the released jars and were not run.

Everything so far has been a library call. Applications, websites and other teams need a service: a stable HTTP contract that streams, authenticates, rate-limits, versions and documents itself. The streaming mechanics of each framework are covered in LangChain: Streaming and Spring AI: Streaming & Reactive, and REST API design in general in Spring Boot: REST APIs; this page designs DocsAssistant’s public API on top of them. Chat channels (Slack, Teams, email) are covered in the Conversational Channels sub-section of this guide, which consumes this API; the MCP exposure of the same retriever is on RAG Behind MCP.

The contract

POST /v1/ask takes a question and returns an answer with citations, either as one JSON document (Accept: application/json) or as a stream of server-sent events (Accept: text/event-stream).

Field Type Meaning

Request

question

string, 1 to 4 000 characters

The user’s message.

conversationId

string, optional

An existing conversation of the caller; omitted for a new one (the response returns the new ID).

filters

object, optional

Narrowing filters the UI offers: component, version, sources[]. Never ACLs; those come from the token.

Response

answer

string

The answer with [n] citation markers.

citations

array

{marker, chunkId, title, url, quote, start, end, page}, resolved and verified server-side (Citations & Grounding).

usage

object

{inputTokens, outputTokens, costUsd} for the request.

traceId

string

The OpenTelemetry trace ID, for support and for attaching feedback (Observability & Tracing).

conversationId, grounded

string, boolean

The conversation used; whether the grounding checks passed.

Errors use RFC 9457 problem details (application/problem+json) with a stable type URI: rate-limited, conversation-not-found, question-too-long, blocked-by-policy. Once a stream has started, errors are sent as an error event instead, because the HTTP status is already 200.

The OpenAPI definition

OpenAPI 3.2 can describe a streamed response item by item: for text/event-stream, itemSchema gives the schema of one event. FastAPI generates the JSON side from the Pydantic models; the streamed side is worth writing down explicitly:

Server-sent events

SSE is the right default for streaming answers to browsers and apps: it is plain HTTP, passes through proxies and load balancers, reconnects automatically, and is one-directional, which matches "question in, answer out". DocsAssistant emits six event types:

Event Payload

status

{"stage": "retrieving" | "reading" | "writing", "detail": …} — progress before the first token.

token

{"text": "…"} — the next piece of the answer.

citations

The resolved and verified citations, once the answer is complete.

grounding

{"grounded": true, "flagged": […]} — the trailing verdict of the grounding check.

done

{"conversationId": …, "traceId": …, "usage": {…}} — closes the turn.

error

{"type": "…"} — a problem type, never a stack trace.

FastAPI with EventSourceResponse

FastAPI’s fastapi.sse module turns an async generator into an SSE response: declare response_class=EventSourceResponse and yield ServerSentEvent objects. The agent is the persistent one from Conversational RAG & Memory, and the caller comes from the token as on Access Control & Privacy:

The stream the route produced for "What is ef_search?" in that run, with a scripted model that cited one retrieved passage (c1) and one passage it was never given (c9):

event: status
data: {"stage": "retrieving"}

event: status
data: {"stage": "writing", "passages": 1}

event: token
data: {"text": "ef_search sets the candidate list size [c1]. Not [c9]."}

event: citations
data: [{"marker": 1, "chunkId": "c1", "source": "vector-rag/ann-indexes"}]

event: done
data: {"conversationId": "conv1", "traceId": "00000000000000000000000000000000"}

The fabricated c9 is dropped from citations; the trace ID is all zeros because no OpenTelemetry SDK was configured in the test. Everything that can fail with an HTTP status — the token, the conversation ownership — runs in dependencies, which FastAPI resolves before the first byte of the stream; an exception raised inside the generator can only become an error event. The citation step here only keeps IDs that were really retrieved; the full verification with quotes and spans from Citations & Grounding slots in at the same place, followed by the grounding event. For clients that want a single JSON document, a second route (or content negotiation on Accept) runs agent.ainvoke and returns an AskResponse model. Keep the SSE connection alive through proxies by sending a comment line (ServerSentEvent(comment="keep-alive")) every 15 seconds while the model thinks.

Spring: Flux<ServerSentEvent> from ChatClient.stream()

With Spring MVC, a controller method can return a Reactor Flux; ServerSentEvent controls the event name. The identity comes from the resource server’s Jwt, and the memory key and ACL filter are built from it as on the previous pages:

}

Ownership of the conversationId must be checked exactly as in the Python version before it is used; the check is omitted here for length (see Conversational RAG & Memory). To emit citations at the end, stream chatClientResponse() instead of content(): the last element’s ChatResponse metadata carries the retrieved documents under RetrievalAugmentationAdvisor.DOCUMENT_CONTEXT.

LangChain4j: TokenStream to SseEmitter

A LangChain4j AI service method that returns TokenStream calls back for retrieved content, partial responses and completion. In a Spring MVC controller the callbacks write to an SseEmitter:

        } catch (IOException clientGone) {
            emitter.completeWithError(clientGone);
        }
    }
}

The conversation ID is resolved before the emitter is returned, so a foreign ID is a plain 404, not an error event: a missing ID gets a new UUID registered to the caller, and a client-supplied one must belong to the caller before it becomes part of the memory key. The readable ACLs come from the same readableAcls(jwt) policy as the Spring AI controller.

A WebSocket variant

WebSockets are worth their extra complexity when the client needs to talk while the server streams: cancelling a generation, sending the next question without waiting, or voice and typing indicators. The protocol is a small set of JSON messages over one connection; authentication happens once, at connect time (a token in the first message, or a short-lived ticket in the URL, because browsers cannot set an Authorization header on WebSocket connections):

            running.cancel() # stop paying for tokens nobody will read

An invalid or missing token closes the connection with code 1008 (policy violation): the handler raises WebSocketException, which FastAPI turns into a close frame even after accept(). An unknown conversation ID is answered with an error message and the connection stays open; resolve_conversation raises HTTPException, which cannot become an HTTP response once the connection is a WebSocket, so the handler catches it.

Cancelling the task stops the model stream, which matters for cost: an abandoned SSE request should do the same, by checking await request.is_disconnected() or relying on the server cancelling the generator when the client goes away. In Spring, the equivalent is a WebSocketHandler (see Spring Framework — WebSockets) that disposes the Flux subscription on cancel.

Uploading a document for indexing is slow and must not hold a request open. The endpoint accepts the document, stores it, enqueues a job and answers 202 Accepted with the job’s location; the client polls the job (or subscribes to a webhook or an SSE job stream):

Call Response Notes

POST /v1/documents (multipart, Idempotency-Key)

202 Accepted, Location: /v1/jobs/{jobId}, body {"jobId", "status": "queued"}

The ACL of the new document comes from the uploader’s rights and an explicit, validated acl field.

GET /v1/jobs/{jobId}

200 with {"status": "queued" | "parsing" | "embedding" | "indexed" | "failed", "error", "chunks"}

Backed by the job ledger of Ingestion Pipelines & Freshness.

DELETE /v1/documents/{documentId}

202 Accepted with a job

Deletes chunks, graph nodes and cache entries asynchronously.

Idempotency keys

Mobile clients retry. A retried POST /v1/documents must not index the document twice, and a retried POST /v1/ask should not pay for the answer twice. The client sends an Idempotency-Key header (a UUID per logical operation); the server remembers the key with the response for a limited time and replays it for a repeat. A key reused with a different body is an error (422):

docsassistant/idempotency.py — replay responses for repeated keys (Python, redis-py)
import hashlib
import json
import os

import redis.asyncio as redis
from fastapi import HTTPException

store = redis.Redis.from_url(os.environ["REDIS_URL"], decode_responses=True)
TTL_S = 24 * 3600

async def run_once(user_id: str, key: str, body: dict, handler) -> dict:
    """Execute handler(body) at most once per (user, key); replay the stored result afterwards."""
    fingerprint = hashlib.sha256(json.dumps(body, sort_keys=True).encode()).hexdigest()
    slot = f"idem:{user_id}:{key}"
    claimed = await store.set(slot, json.dumps({"state": "running", "fp": fingerprint}), nx=True, ex=TTL_S)
    if not claimed:
        record = json.loads(await store.get(slot))
        if record["fp"] != fingerprint:
            raise HTTPException(status_code=422, detail="Idempotency-Key reused with a different request")
        if record["state"] == "running":
            raise HTTPException(status_code=409, detail="The original request is still in progress")
        return record["response"]
    try:
        response = await handler(body)
    except Exception:
        await store.delete(slot) # release the claim so that a retry can run the request
        raise
    await store.set(slot, json.dumps({"state": "done", "fp": fingerprint, "response": response}), ex=TTL_S)
    return response

A failed request does not keep the key: the handler’s exception deletes the running claim, so a retry with the same key runs again instead of getting 409 for 24 hours. Scope keys by user, as above, so one client cannot replay another’s response. For streamed answers, store the final answer and replay it as a short stream.

Authentication with OAuth 2.0 and JWT

The API is an OAuth 2.0 resource server: clients obtain access tokens from the organisation’s identity provider (authorization code with PKCE for the web widget and mobile apps, client credentials for services) and send them as bearer tokens. The server validates signature, issuer, audience and expiry, and reads the subject and groups. In Python that is the caller_from_token dependency above; in Spring Boot it is configuration plus a security filter chain:

The flows, token types and hardening advice are in OAuth, in particular Browser-Based Apps for the widget and Access and Refresh Tokens.

Rate limiting

A RAG request costs real money, so rate limits protect the budget as much as the service. Limit on two axes: requests per user per minute (abuse and runaway clients) and tokens per user or tenant per day (cost). Enforce the first at the API gateway where possible; enforce the second in the service, where token usage is known after each call. Answer 429 Too Many Requests with a Retry-After header and a problem-details body, and expose the remaining budget in response headers so well-behaved clients can slow down. A token bucket per user in Redis is the usual implementation; the Redis patterns (counters with expiry, Lua scripts for atomic buckets) are in Redis Use Cases and Patterns.

Versioning

Version the path (/v1/ask) and treat the contract as public. Within a version, changes are additive only: new optional request fields, new response fields, new SSE event types that clients ignore when unknown (document that rule). Breaking changes — a renamed field, a changed citation schema — go to /v2, and /v1 announces its end with the Deprecation and Sunset response headers. Model and prompt changes are not API versions, but they change answers: record the model and prompt version in the trace and the done event, so clients and support can tell which behaviour produced an answer.

A minimal browser widget

The browser’s EventSource only supports GET without custom headers, so a POST with a bearer token reads the stream with fetch and a small SSE parser. The widget below renders tokens as they arrive and citations at the end; the token comes from the page’s OAuth client (see Browser-Based Apps):

docs-assistant-widget.js — consuming the SSE stream from a web page (JavaScript)
export async function ask(question, { token, conversationId, onToken, onStatus, onCitations, onDone, signal }) {
  const res = await fetch("https://api.example.org/v1/ask", {
    method: "POST",
    headers: { "Content-Type": "application/json", Accept: "text/event-stream", Authorization: `Bearer ${token}` },
    body: JSON.stringify({ question, conversationId }),
    signal, // AbortController: the user pressed "stop"
  });
  if (!res.ok) throw new Error((await res.json()).type ?? res.status);

  const reader = res.body.pipeThrough(new TextDecoderStream()).getReader();
  let buffer = "";
  for (;;) {
    const { value, done } = await reader.read();
    if (done) break;
    buffer += value;
    let end;
    while ((end = buffer.indexOf("\n\n")) >= 0) {       // one SSE event per blank-line-terminated block
      const block = buffer.slice(0, end);
      buffer = buffer.slice(end + 2);
      const event = /^event: (.*)$/m.exec(block)?.[1] ?? "message";
      const data = block.split("\n").filter((l) => l.startsWith("data:")).map((l) => l.slice(5).trim()).join("\n");
      if (!data) continue; // comments and keep-alives
      const payload = JSON.parse(data);
      if (event === "token") onToken(payload.text);
      else if (event === "status") onStatus?.(payload);
      else if (event === "citations") onCitations?.(payload);
      else if (event === "done") onDone?.(payload);
      else if (event === "error") throw new Error(payload.type);
    }
  }
}

Render the answer text as text, never as HTML: model output is untrusted, and inserting it with innerHTML turns a prompt injection into cross-site scripting. Build citation links from the server’s citations payload only.

The API and SSE design on this page is written from the official FastAPI, Spring and LangChain4j documentation; the books consulted for this sub-section do not cover REST, FastAPI or SSE serving (Polzer’s cookbook stops at a Streamlit UI), as noted on the landing page.
